Chemically and physically the same as agates, jaspers earn their distinction through appearance alone. Whereas agates tend to maintain some of the transparency of pure chalcedony, jaspers are entirely opaque. Though formed, as agates, through the development over time of silicate in host rocks and other natural vessels, it is the natural variances in jasper which separate them from other agates.
